"Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses." Proverbs 27:5-6
Not long ago, I had the opportunity to be set straight by a gentleman in my church. While I cannot describe it as a pleasant experience, I immediately had two thoughts enter my mind. The first, I need to pay attention to what my friend is saying--he is someone I respect who sounds like he's speaking the truth. Second, I love my friend even more for caring enough to be honest with me. Honesty is rarely telling someone the most popular thing, but more likely the most painful thing. It's difficult to be that transparent with folks, but that is exactly what Christians are to do. Lovingly, humbly, prayerfully, and methodically helping those who are veering off track. Believe it or not, to do anything less is a sin. You may find an occasion where the Lord may use you to do something similar to a brother or sister. Consider it an honor to be used, even if you face persecution for it. More possibly, you may be the recipient as I have been on more than one occasion. Watch carefully how you respond to anyone--the Lord may be speaking through them.
"He who rebukes a man will in the end gain more favor than he who has a flattering tongue." Proverbs 28:23
