Perspective
When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to observe the labor that is done on earth -people getting no sleep day or night – (17)then I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it. (Ecclesiastes 8:16-17)
Friends,
Let it be known, this is the summer Ecclesiastes broke my brain. This book of the Bible is filled with meandering paths of wisdom, logic, and exploration and more often than not, I have been finding myself scratching my head and thinking perhaps I missed a sign post. I have been practicing tools like cross references, multiple translations, paraphrasing, and word studies but I think my biggest help is a weekly meeting with 150 other women to talk about our study and hear a teaching on the portion we focused on each week.
I am just reminded how God has wired all our brains differently. I know the women teaching have put in a LOT of study time and I know they do not take this job of teaching lightly. The rest of us sitting in the audience benefit from their wisdom and the way their brains are wired to teach. (Ok, I like to teach too…but not Ecclesiastes!) I get to lead a small group and I love how each of these women is wired differently. They bring different insights and questions to the conversation and it has been such a blessing to wrestle through these ideas and dig down to truth.
Often, my job is to do the same thing. From a different perspective, I can help them figure out where the path even is and dig down to the truth of what needs to happen next. Sometimes we get to dream big dreams, sometimes we figure out how to put food on the table for a week – both are valuable. But, just like God is teaching me I don’t have to understand all of Ecclesiastes in one sitting, I get to spend time talking with these women, figuring out next steps. Thank God we are not all looking at the problem the same way! What a beautiful thing when we all bring our own skill sets to the table!
Blessings,
Elizabeth Kilby
