The Long Game
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. Luke 13:34
I’m often blown away at the work we’re able to do today because of relationships we built with teenagers ten or twenty years ago. A great example happened just this month. A young woman who I met around 2005 at one of our teen centers found herself trapped in a hopeless situation where she was being beaten while her young son watched. She had no transportation and no way out. She got online, found one of my social media accounts, and reached out for help. Working with other members of our staff we were able to move her and her son into a safe place. Just two weeks later, she’s working on getting the help she needs for an addiction while we remain in contact and hold out the Gospel of love. Interestingly enough, this is the same young woman who asked me to help her find adoptive parents for a crisis pregnancy she was carrying to term just last year. We were successful and I mark this as one of our greatest accomplishments ever!
Another similar, yet not as happy situation, occurred this month with a young person who reached out for help time and time again, but never really followed through. Her social media accounts are replete with the same situation over and over again. She meets a guy. She thinks he’s awesome! “He’s so much different than every other guy”. This lasts or a week or so, occasionally a little longer, and then she’s being abused, or he cheats on her. As always, she can’t believe people are so horrible, asks me for help, we offer it an make a plan… and then crickets. Of course, these are the most difficult ones because I’ve shared the Truth with her on multiple occasions. But, like most people, a person never really changes until they hit rock bottom. In her case, she’s still young, healthy and headstrong. But thankfully for all of us, the Lord also plays the long game.
If you think about it, lift each of these folks up in prayer this month. We could all use it!
Blessings in Christ,
