I had a young man really rip into me verbally the other day, which is not unusual with the type of unchurched youth we reach out to at our youth centers. Still, there's something about being yelled at by a teenager that can get under my skin pretty quickly. Maybe it's because I have children older than them, or maybe because I left my teenage years over twenty years ago and feel I deserve some small amount of respect. Either way, it's difficult, but on the whole, the way I respond is really the only thing I can control, so I try to do my best to keep my cool and witness with my walk. Tonight however, a Christian kid ripped into me... which as they say "is a whole 'nuther story." The world may be full of disrespectful people tearing into each other, but those who call on the name of Jesus Christ are supposed to march to a completely different drummer. Tonight my response was a gentle rebuke of my own. It went something like, "Since you know so much about the Bible, then you'll know you should not be rebuking an older man harshly." Hopefully he learned something from it, AND maybe we all can!
"Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity." 1 Timothy 5:1-2
