Prideful?
The longer I live the more I become convinced that we (humankind) are exactly what the Lord Jesus said we were; prideful and wicked sinners. I've always known those things were true of myself, but I've always been one of those folks who wanted to believe better things were possible from others. I do believe they ARE possible, but only through the work of the Holy Spirit of God in Christ followers. No matter whether it's in the workplace, the marketplace, or the worship place, people left to their sinful ways will destroy each other and undermine the work of God. I believe it's even highly possible that pastors and teachers have stronger attacks from the enemies of God (in this world and in the heavenly realm), which almost guarantees that much done in the name of God will be anything but "holy." It was true in Jesus' day, and it's true today as well. People never like it when others get the credit for things they feel they should have been lauded for. People never like it when others outperform them. And people never like being upstaged... even if it's by the Son of Almighty God.
"The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them. But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple area, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they were indignant. 'Do you hear what these children are saying?' they asked him. 'Yes,' replied Jesus, 'have you never read, 'From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise?'" Matthew 21:14-16
And for that--for healing people and doing God's work, the religious aristocracy wanted Him dead! They got their way, too!
