It's No Big Deal!
"For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." 1 Corinthians 1:18
This morning I spent an hour on the telephone with customer service at my bank. A few days earlier, I tried to do some motor vehicle registration online as was suggested. I wound up having to call in and “hold”, and eventually, drive to the BMV and stand in line at the registrar. Although many things are billed as “easy”, the reality is some things are just difficult. Some things that are supposed to be “quick and easy” wind up being slow and tedious.
As a minister, I sometimes think people take this reality and mis-appropriate it to the things of the Lord. For example, some people think our Heavenly Father should just overlook sin. “It’s no big deal anyway!” When the reality is, even the smallest infraction against God’s pure and holy nature must be reconciled. His wrath against sin is righteous and all sin must be paid for. So, they think it should be easy, but in fact, sin required a holy and perfect sacrifice be made to avenge God’s wrath against it. There was nothing simple or easy about it. On the opposite side of the coin, once the Spirit convicts us of sin, often we think it should be difficult to receive forgiveness when in fact it’s easy for those who are “in Christ. The work of the Cross of Christ has been completed and need not be done again. What’s likely worse, many who know the truth of the Gospel still somehow cannot seem to accept God’s forgiveness for their short comings. They find it impossible to leave the past in the past and move on in peace and love, knowing they’ve been forgiven. Many of these people short sell the power of the Cross and spend a lifetime attempting to somehow compensate for their own errors. And so the difficult is made simple and the simple is made difficult for no reason. Honestly, only Satan could be behind such a devastating reality. Those who should be convicted of sin feel no need. Those who have been forgiven still carry the guilt for no heavenly reason.
And so our work continues. As always, I’m grateful for the part you play in keeping our ministry alive!
Blessings in Christ,
Pastor Jim Kilby
