I'm Good.
Encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. (Ecclesiastes 4:10)
Friends,
“How are you?”
Seems like an easy enough question, doesn’t it? Generally, the answer is, “I’m good. How are you?” I started thinking recently about how infrequently we answer this question with much honesty or ask it with much expectation for truth. What if we gave real answers? What if people knew we were willing to listen to a real answer when we ask? I realize it takes time to build these kinds of relationships and finding trustworthy, safe people isn’t always easy.
I asked a friend how she was doing recently and instead of leaving it at, “I’m doing ok.” She went on to share how she was really doing. There were hard things going on in her life. There were things she probably didn’t really want to tell me. But instead of hiding, instead of pretending things were good, she told the truth.
We didn’t solve all her problems in the moment, but two things happened. First, she knew she wasn’t in it alone. There were no secrets, no hiding, no shame. Second, we built our relationship. There was a little more trust, a little more compassion, a little more love.
These relationships, THAT relationship, is worth the investment. It is worth the time, energy, and attention because that young lady is worth all those things and more. From one dearly loved child of God to another, let’s invest in relationships so there is freedom to share our hearts. Then, let’s listen and let’s not hide.
In Christ,
