I Got My Rights!
I Got My Rights!
We live in a world where everyone seems to know their rights. I learned about a whole lot of "rights" just the other day. I learned them from a young man who found his way into my office for breaking a few rules at one of the youth centers I run. Not only did he know all about "his" rights, but he knew all about mine as well. At least he knew all about the ones I didn't have! "You got no right to do this... or you got no right to do that. I know my rights!" No doubt living in a country where we never stop talking about our rights has fueled the fire. Too bad it's been a generation or two since the vast majority of people thought to teach their children about responsibilities. Can you even imagine these words coming from an angry young person? "You have a responsibility to discipline me. You have a responsibility to protect others from me. I know my responsibilities!" No... I didn't think so! But before we cast judgement on anyone, let's remember that Christians today also seem to know much more about their "rights" than they do about their "responsibilities."
"If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me. What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so NOT MAKE USE OF MY RIGHTS in preaching it. Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 1 Corinthians 9:17-19 (Emphasis mine)
