"Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" John, The Baptist (John 1:29, NKJV)
Friends,
As we pass the Thanksgiving holiday and head into December and all the busyness that is our modern Christmas season, I want to remind you of something quite powerful. The Lord wasn’t more than a few pages into giving us the account of Creation in Genesis before He did something remarkable. He set aside a specific day as “holy”. Specifically, a Sabbath. Holy, meant a “day set apart” from the other ones. Aka, a “holy day” or in today’s vernacular, a “holiday”. During the rush-rush-rush of December, if we’re not really mindful about it, my family we can begin to not have anything being set aside as “holy”. It doesn’t help that December also has four family birthday celebrations and the end of the tax year for our businesses. Like everyone, we also have many get-together’s for family, business and church/ministry. That’s in addition to figuring out what to buy or make for ten children, eleven grandchildren, their wives/husbands, etc., etc., etc. So, if your family is anything like mine, there’s MUCH to do that has LITTLE to do with a “holy day” set apart to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
So what are we to do after we have this realization? Work faster? Work harder? Organize better? I try to point myself back to the original command to “work six days, and then celebrate a Sabbath” to find my answer. The Lord doesn’t say, “if you’re all done with your work then take a Sabbath.” And He doesn’t say, “If you can fit it in your busy schedule then take a Sabbath.” He just says, “DO IT!” And so, maybe a reminder that this “holiday” is a Sabbath to “Behold, the Lamb that takes away the sin of the world” will help. Without Him, we have absolutely nothing, and nothing to give.
Blessings in Christ,
Pastor Jim Kilby
