If there's one thing I really like about being "all grown up" it's my autonomy. Although I have many people in my life who I love and who I'm close with, it's been decades since any of them have had any real authority over me. That's the American way... isn't it? Once you're out on your own, you've got to answer to your boss, and that's about it! It's funny, the United States is one of the few countries in the world where such a thing is true? In many (if not most) countries in the world, families have much more involvement and control in each other's lives. And, while I do like being a "big boy" and calling most of my own shots, that's really not the best position for me to be in. Because I'm painfully aware of the fact that, left to my own devices, I can easily get off track personally, professionally, or spiritually, I willingly choose to give up my autonomy in favor of accountability and growth. It's kind of like giving your life to Christ, only I give authority to a few men to use God's Word against me any time they wish. That's family... and that's what we all need if we're going to finish strong in the faith.
"As iron sharpens iron so one man sharpens another." Proverbs 27:17
So... like it or not, do you have anyone in your life who you've given complete authority to "get in your face"? You'll never be the Christian you could be until you not only give someone that authority, but also willingly accept their love and their discipline.
